Ice Hockey New Zealand is proud to announce the official launch of the Kiwi Ice Hockey School – a groundbreaking national initiative aimed at providing a consistent, high-quality entry point for young players across the country. The programme introduces a new national framework for Learn to Play and Under-12 hockey, representing a significant step forward in youth development for the sport.
Kiwi Ice Hockey School has been developed in close collaboration with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and USA Hockey, ensuring it is aligned with the world’s best practices in athlete development. The programme is built around a fun, age-appropriate environment that prioritises skill development, player engagement, and long-term progression in the sport.
The launch was accompanied by the nationwide distribution of free youth playing equipment to all ice hockey clubs in New Zealand. This initiative ensures that new players have equal access to essential gear, helping to lower financial barriers and make the sport more accessible to families across the country. Every player who participates in Kiwi Ice Hockey School will receive a free jersey – their first New Zealand jersey.
“This is a major milestone for ice hockey in New Zealand,” says Paris Heyd, General Manager of Ice Hockey New Zealand. “For the first time, we have a unified, nationwide approach to introducing kids to the game. It’s not only about building better players – it’s about building a stronger hockey community and ensuring every child has a positive and rewarding experience from day one.”
Kiwi Ice Hockey School represents the first two stages in Ice Hockey New Zealand’s wider player development model, forming the foundation of a long-term athlete pathway. It will be delivered by local clubs across the country, who will implement a shared set of national principles and concepts tailored to the needs of young Kiwi players.
Beyond the on-ice curriculum, the programme includes a full support structure for clubs. This covers areas such as coach training, marketing resources, administrative tools, and access to essential equipment, making it easier for clubs to focus on delivering a great experience for their players and families.
“This initiative reflects our commitment to raising the overall standard of hockey in New Zealand,” adds Heyd. “By supporting clubs with a robust framework and practical tools, we’re setting everyone up for long-term success – players, coaches, volunteers, and the sport as a whole.”
The launch of the Kiwi Ice Hockey School is made possible through key partnerships with the IIHF, USA Hockey, NHL Player Association and Centre Ice, and signals a new era of collaboration and growth for the sport nationally.
