Competing in Division IIA for the first time, the New Zealand Under 18 Women’s national ice hockey team, has officially secured its spot in the division for 2026.
The journey began in 2024 when the team won gold in the Division IIB tournament in Bulgaria, earning promotion to the higher division. In 2025, they traveled to Riga, Latvia, to take on seasoned opponents in Division IIA. Facing stronger and more experienced teams, the Kiwis showed heart, skill, and an unwavering fighting spirit in every game.
Breaking New Ground in Riga
The tournament kicked off with a historic matchup against the host nation, Latvia. It was the first time New Zealand had faced Latvia at any level of international play, a country whose national men’s team competes in the highest division globally.
Game two marked another milestone when Jacinta Hoglund, a forward from Christchurch, scored New Zealand’s first-ever goal in Division IIA during their match against Kazakhstan.
The turning point of the tournament came in game four against Chinese Taipei. New Zealand came out firing, scoring all four of their goals in a thrilling first period. Despite a spirited comeback attempt by Chinese Taipei, the Kiwis held on for a nail-biting 4-3 victory. This win ultimately decided New Zealand’s fate, ensuring they avoided relegation and remained in Division IIA for 2026.
Building a Legacy
While the team faced tough losses against powerhouse teams like Great Britain and Kazakhstan, their ability to persevere and secure a critical win highlights the progress of women’s ice hockey in New Zealand. The team’s achievements are a testament to the growing talent and determination of our young female players.
With Division IIA status secured for 2026, New Zealand’s U18 women’s team is poised to keep climbing the ranks and making history on the international stage.
Head Coach, Matt Sandford said “I felt incredibly privileged to have the opportunity to lead this amazing team as we stepped up to Division IIA in 2025. The jump in competition level was significant, but our players showed immense passion—especially in our first game against Latvia and our hard-fought victory against Chinese Taipei.”
The team named goaltender, Zadia Paulse, Team MVP at the conclusion of the tournament. Paulse faced a total of 166 shots in 211 game minutes, and stood her aground against high quality teams.
#21 Aoife Orr said there was “no doubt” Zadia was the team MVP, “we’re very happy to have achieved our goal of remaining in Division IIA”.
